- The things Jesus tells us to avoid are certainly challenging. But the good things he calls us to embrace—love, even for our enemies—are arguably even harder.
- Jesus wants us to show love, even to people who treat us hatefully. In this way, he invites us to see beyond others’ harmful actions, and into their humanity.
- The phrase often translated as “be perfect” actually refers to being consistent in our love for unlovable people—in the same way that God is consistent in his love for us.
- Who is one person you find especially hard to love?
- What would it look like to love them anyway?
- For today’s action challenge, think of the person you know who is the most unlike you. Maybe they resent you for some reason, or maybe they don’t—but today’s challenge is to figure out what you can do to proactively, intentionally show love and care to that person. It doesn’t have to be a huge gesture, maybe just something as simple as getting them a coffee. Try this and see what happens. And if they ask why, say something simple, like, “I just wanted you to feel seen today.”
