Sunday, December 7: “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” by Camila Cabello
Before we discuss anything else, it’s worth saying that this specific version of this song has been memed quite a bit. The way that Camila Cabello sings the line “I’ll be home for Christmas” with Christmas sounding like “Crwismwas” is eminently funny and absolutely worth a listen.
Memes aside, “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” is an incredibly endearing song. For many, Christmas is a season to be with friends and family, and nothing quite captures that feeling of homecoming like the words and melody here.
But there’s also a sadness to the song—a longing. The line “If only in my dreams” implies that, perhaps, this person can’t actually make it home for Christmas. That they can only dream of their homecoming.
It’s hard to hear this and not think of the homecoming in Jesus’ story of the prodigal son. “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” is a reminder that Christmas is a time to come home. Maybe we might not be able to physically be at home, or maybe we don’t feel like we have a home—but we do have a heavenly Father who is always ready to welcome us back. So ready in fact, that he sent his son to be with us and remind us that we can come home.
