Day 1: Getting A Lay Of The Cultural Landscape

Start Here:

Watch This Video:

Then Talk About It:

Discussion Questions

  • – Listen to the lyrics of Olivia Rodrigo’s Song, Brutal together (remember to find the clean version of “Brutal”).
  •
  • – Start with what’s good. What did you like? What resonated? This keeps the conversation positive, and reminds us that the Enemy can only ever twist or distort God’s good world. Every cultural artifact (a song, movie, or cultural value) is based on a desire or idea that is good (breakup songs acknowledge the beauty of romance and the difficulty of rejection…even violence reminds us that some things are worth fighting for and protecting)].

    –

This doesn’t mean that everything about a show or a song is good, it just means that there is at least one remnant of the good way that God created the world in it.
  •
  • – Then move to deeper analysis. This can include what you disagree with or what you don’t like about the song.
  •
  • – Remember to give your teen lots of space to process, and to ask follow up questions to really hear them out. Avoid talking at them.
  • Have a dialogue (a back and forth where both of you get to share).
